late post

Little behind on this one, but I got in a 40 min run the other day and it was great.  I didn’t have to stop.  I didn’t get pain in my calves, as I had been the last year or so.

I attribute it to weight loss.  I weigh 224 now, when a month ago I weighed 247.  I had some Gall Bladder issues that caused me to pretty much stop eating, I don’t recommend it as a form of weight loss, but hey, it worked. :P  My surgery is set up for the 22nd, so I’ll try to get some good quality runs in before I’m bedridden that week.

Also, now that I CAN run my nike+  thing has decided to not work.  Go figure. :P

Another run, just before work.  I’ve been having to work nights 1030 to 630am, and I’ll tell what, that derails most of your motivation to work out, when you’re tired all the time.  Still I managed to get myself to the gym and onto the treadmill.  Still not outdoor running weather here, it’s been raining most of the time with little bouts of snow.  There was actual thunder tonight, strange weather, for sure.

Running…again.

Posted by Patrick under: Run.

So, been gone for a while.  Stopped running for a bit, tried to lose some weight, hoping that would help with the calve situation…it didn’t.  But I’m gonna just run, anyway.  I’ll do the run/walk thing, running a few minutes and then walking for a few minutes and increasing the running as my weight comes down and my calves get used to the running again.

Man, I make it sound like I’m obese, or something, but I’m not.  I’m a large guy, six foot two, and I remember when I first started running it was pretty hard on my calves.  I’ve found, though, that running is the best thing for me to do, to lose weight.  Dieting doesn’t do much, except halt the scale from ticking upwards.  Running, for me, is the magic elixir that melts the fat.  So I just gotta suck it up and endure some pain.  :P

Got half way there

Posted by Patrick under: Run.

I still feel good about the run, even though I only did half the job. My calves hurt for the first couple of miles, then loosened up, but then, for the other half of the run, my left leg kept going in and out of numbness. I saw hope, though, and so I’m going to try to stay on schedule, for the marathon.

I think one of the reasons I did better tonight, than on other nights, was because I slowed my pace down a bit, truthfully it’s already slow but tonight was even slower. :P And so it wasn’t such a huge workout for my legs. Once I get some base down I’ll start speeding up the treadmill. My goal for the Vancouver marathon isn’t 4 hours or anything it’s just to finish, right now. Later, in the fall, I’ll start putting some real goals on the table.

Do or die time

Posted by Patrick under: Uncategorized.

So tonight I’ll be making my choice.  To run the Vancouver Marathon or not.

The issue is my calves, tight isn’t the word I would use, I’d say they were a level up from tight, and painful.  And that’s only after the first 3/4ths of a mile.  Today is long run Sunday and I have to do 8 miles.  I’ve been having to break down my 3 mile runs, so my legs could get through, and 8 miles seems impossible.  Considering that 8 miles is one of the shorter long runs I’ll be doing in the coming months I need to gauge whether or not I’ll be able to get through anything as long or longer.  So, I’ll get on that treadmill and hook up my nike+ and give it a try.

And if it doesn’t work, if my calves seize up again and tell me that I can’t do it, then I’ll be master of the bike or pool, until I get a little lighter, lose some weight, and then I’ll try again, and hopefully I’ll be able to do some of the fall marathons.

I do like running and it’s my fault I’m having trouble now, with my calves.  After the last marathon I ran I pretty much stopped running all together.  So I gained almost forty pounds, over the course of a year and a half, and now that weight is what’s making it hard to get back into this.

So I’ll be back later to give my verdict.

Like someone else said, it’s time to HTFU :D

Calves

Posted by Patrick under: Uncategorized.

Gotta say the boys were tight today.  I got to around the 3/4ths mile mark and they started to tighten up and the pain really set in.  Usually I can just run through it and my calves will calm down and relax but not today.  Today I had to break my run into parts, still missed the third mile, but got the first two in.  In between the running I sat on the bike for a while, hoping that would warm my calves up.

I’m hoping that it’ll go away in the next few weeks, otherwise it’ll make training for a marathon pretty hard.  I’m thinking once I’ve lost some of the weight I’ve gained since my last marathon then I’ll be fine.

On a better note….I got to use my Nike+ today, I remembered to put the little sensor in my gym bag.  Pretty cool.  I got home, uploaded my runs, and looked at the little graph of my workouts.  I like it, it lets you set goals and then keeps a graph of your goal, marking where you are in relations to where you want to be.  I’m a fan, for sure.
